Alana Springsteen 'TWENTY SOMETHING: Messing It Up' EP Review

Alana Springsteen’s newest EP dropped March, Friday 24th. This follows Springsteen's History of Breaking Up series and several singles, all leading up to this most recent release. On the project, she showcases relatability and songwriting that feels well beyond her years.

The EP’s first track is the perfect song to open with. “you don’t deserve a country song” is like country music’s version of Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song." Talking about a bad relationship, Springsteen uses strong lyrics and brilliant instrumentation to create an edgy pop country vibe that suits the topic perfectly. As an artist, she really excels in lyrics. Lines like, “You ain’t worth three chords and the truth” and “I bet you thought that I’d be drinking alone at the bar / I bet you thought that I’d be driving by your house in my car” help the audience connect with Springsteen

The second entry entitled “if you love me now” was even more memorable. The introduction of the song was reminiscent of old Taylor Swift. That was only continued with the strong lyricism and storytelling. The tune opens with a captivating line as Springsteen sings, “You should know I’m the bad guy / Know I’m the villain." Not only does she shine as the singer, but the band shines as well. The tune has an amazing guitar solo that helps bring “if you love me now” to a close.

“goodbye looks good on you” is Springsteen’s duet with singer Mitchell Tenpenny. The two singers harmonize perfectly throughout the song. In the chorus, Springsteen to showcase her ranger with the higher vocal line. Tenpenny gets to take over the lead vocal in the second verse, and his rough yet comforting voice keeps the audience captivated.

The last song on the EP is called “shoulder to cry on." The title itself is clever as it plays on the old cliché. It’s about crying on the shoulder of the highway instead of a loved one. The cleverness doesn’t stop the song from being catchy. The beginning of the chorus is easily the best part with Springsteen exclaiming, “I need a drink / But dammit I’m driving / Said I was fine / But dammit I’m lying." It’s the perfect song to scream while driving, and it’s the perfect song to end her EP.
