Brantley Gilbert “How To Talk To Girls” Song Review
Country music’s “bad boy” Brantley Gilbert lets his guard down with the release of his new song “How To Talk To Girls”. The Georgia native and father of two breaks down all his walls with a sweet song with his childhood sweetheart wife, and daughter, Braylen, in mind. With writing credits to Brock Berryhill, Brian Wayne Davis, Brandon Day, Chase McGill, Josh Phillips, Taylor Phillips, Michael Ray, Brantley Gilbert, and wife Amber themselves, “How To Talk To Girls” is a vulnerable and personal piece to the family that introduces fans to a new side of Gilbert.
“‘Cause this angel hangs on every word I say / She’s gettin’ so much more than me than my last name / Everything, just like her momma / She’s got me at a loss for words / I guess I’m still learnin’ how to talk to girls.”
With just the song title alone, it would seem to follow the same theme as Gilbert’s usual music: Saturday nights, small towns, Broadway bars, etc. however, we get so much more than we expected with the emotionally charged lyrics directed towards Gilbert’s daughter. The song is a personal oath to the two most important women in his life, and he expresses his fears when it comes to his relationship with them as the song progresses.
The bridge of the song holds every aspect of Gilbert’s personality with just a few lines as he reveals these intimate conversations he’s anticipating for the future. “What about sixteen? / What about God? / What about big dreams? / And oh my God, what about boys? / The bad ones / Will she find out her momma has one?” are just a few that circle his mind as he tries to encapsulate his feelings in a two-minute song when communicating with his wife and daughter.
“I started writing this one with my wife and daughter in mind,” shares Gilbert. “I’ve known Amber since we were kids. I’ve been married to her for 6 years now, and I’m still in awe of her. Then my daughter came along, and I realized I still struggle to find the right words to say to the girls I love.”
“How To Talk To Girls” is everything we wouldn’t expect from Brantley Gilbert, but everything we needed. The song takes a turn from our expectation of country music’s stereotypes and the title itself, in which we expect it to be about flirting with girls or starting a relationship, and we get something so much deeper. “How To Talk To Girls” breaks boundaries in not just Gilbert’s own music, but country music altogether as he presents male emotion and fragility perfectly as a husband and a father. It’s honesty and fear, truth and bravery all at the same time, and we can’t wait to see more of this side from him.
