Brett Young Talks the Success of "You Didn't" and Teases New Album
“You Didn’t” by Brett Young was released in November 2021. The song entered the top 10 on Billboard's Country Airplay chart on March 24, 2023: it became the track's 70th week spent on the chart and set a record for the longest chart run and the slowest increase into the top 10. “I love that song,“ Young shares when discussing the tune, “It has been the little engine that could."
Young is currently at the end of his '5, 4, 3, 2 1, Tour' which took him to cities across the United States for three months. During the headline run, Young has been playing his classic hits that fans love, as well as showcasing his new music that has yet to be released. “It’s been awesome,” he notes. “We’re doing the whole new record basically right now. The record’s done so we learned it and put it into this year’s show.” They’re playing eight new songs including a cover of Tim McGraw’s “Don’t Take The Girl” which is the track that got Young into country music.
Young's new album, though not released or even announced, will mark a new chapter for the singer. A lot has changed in Young's personal life as he is now a father of two, and musically, he dug into his songwriting senses over the pandemic writing hundreds of new songs.
When discussing the new project he says, “There’s a lot of fighting to make sure I write something for everybody even though I’m in this stage of my life which is very one-dimensional." He adds, "I’m dad and husband and that’s really what it is. And so, being known for break-up songs - gotta figure out how to still write break-up songs, yah know?”
His new era was kickstarted with the romantic, sweet ode "Dance With You." With its love-laced lyrics, Young has created something that is bound to tug on his audience's heartstrings. “My fans like happy sad songs," he exclaims, "That’s kind of the method behind ‘Dance With You.’ That’s a happy sad song. It doesn’t make you sad but it makes you cry.”
Despite the subject matter in "Dance With You," the upcoming project finds Young tapping into a new side of himself for his upcoming release: one that doesn't revolve around his present-day life. He admits, “As a songwriter, I think writing sad songs when you’re not sad is really hard." He continues on, "I was always just writing my stories up until two years ago. Now, I have to keep giving sad songs to people when I’m not sad at all. I think my growth as a songwriter was having to write something that wasn’t current.”
Young teases track like “Uncomfortable," a tune that was inspired by John Mayer's "Comfortable" and Young writing a response to its lyrical story. He also shares an anecdote about an unheard gem titled “Back To Jesus” about getting back together with his wife.
For what he wants his listeners and fans to anticipate from the future era, he sweetly shares, "As a person, I hope people just see me fall further in love with my wife and my children and my family. There are interesting lyrics throughout this record. The world changed. My life changed. The record is a reflection of that I think.”
