Caitlyn Smith 'High & Low' Album Review

American singer-songwriter, Caitlyn Smith released her latest album, High & Low on April 14th, 2023. In this album, Smith expands on her previous release, High, adding six new songs to the tracklist. Smith is best known for her single, “I Can’t” where she sings alongside Old Dominion. The Minnesota native steps outside the box with High & Low, producing every track herself.

The first new song on the track list is “Lately.” “Lately” was released as a single leading up to the release of High & Low on January 20th, 2023. Smith shows off her vocal mastery in “Lately.” The fourth track on the album, and the first new addition is perfection. Smith’s angelic voice and contagious energy come together in “Lately,” forming a heartfelt but fun exploration of how it feels to miss someone. Smith exclaims, “‘Cause you been on my mind, on my mind / On my mind lately / When I say lately I mean / Every second since you've been gone / No matter what I do / It all comes back to you every time.” Smith is evolving, and beginning to explore both the mountains and valleys of life.

Another new track with an impressive impact is “I Think Of You.” Smith leaves listeners with both a smile and a heavy heart when listening to the ninth song on her latest album. Smith delivers a sensational vocal performance, describing how all-encompassing love can be in a way sure to draw tears. Smith cries out, "You knew it was all gonna come down crashing / Still trying to figure out what the hell happened / When I think of everything I ever loved/ I think of you.” The award-winning singer found a way to invoke intense emotion with both her voice and her writing.

High & Low shows a major evolution in the music of Caitlyn Smith. Not only does each new track show major improvement and impressive writing chops but also the fact that Smith produces every single track shows an overflow of talent. Smith takes time to appreciate both sides of life, acknowledging both joy and pain. As Smith moves through life, so does her music.
