Chancey Williams 'One of These Days' Album Review
Chancey Williams, a rising country singer, has released his new album One of These Days. As a former rodeo athlete, Williams didn’t have to imitate the country attitude because he has it in spades, as can be seen in his music.
“I co-wrote eleven of the twelve songs on the new record and I’m really proud of it. I think it speaks to where I am at this point, creatively,” shared Williams of the project. “Trent Willmon and I have really found the space we want to be in. I’m really excited to have a song on this one with Jody Stevens, who brings an entirely different perspective, and to have been able to write some tunes with guys like Brice Long and Bobby Pinson - I really look up to all these folks. To top it off, the musicians on here are really the best, top notch people I’m lucky to work with,"says Williams per a press release.
On the title track, Williams’ vocals are a key player. He has a deep and honest timbre that welcomes the audience in. The minimal harmonies in this song were a great choice because it allows the band and his main vocal line to shine. His voice works in perfect harmony with what he’s singing about: “I hope you don’t run out / Before I run out / Of one of these days.” is just one example of the clever lyrics he has throughout the entirety of the project.
"The Saint" is a stand out due to its electrifying style. Western and classic-country influences are what make the song feel special. He is able to paint a descriptive picture through his storytelling that sets him a part from his peers. "Rodeo Time" exudes the same intense guitar riffs as well as the soaring nature of the story."It's a lot of midnight highway miles / Endless days of eating dust, for a moment underneath the lights / Cowboy, are you though enough?"
On a vulnerable note, "If I Die Before You Wake" takes listeners on a journey. Williams sings from the perspective of a man away at war who is writing back to his love. The lyrics aren't just meant to make someone miss their own loved ones, but he also touches on the hardship that comes with conflict. "I heard about all them folks protesting / As if I really want this war / But that don't stop me from believing / there's just some things worth fighting for."
If there is a song on this album that could sum up its contents the best, it would be "Land of the Buffalo." The tune ignites passion, stirring lyrics, and takes music back to the older days of the country genre. Williams vocals sound as good as any singer within the genre too. If he continues to stick to what is true to him, he's bound to continue the upwards journey he's on.
