Chase Matthew Talks About his New Album 'Come Get Your Memory'

Chase Matthew seems to be on a stark upward trajectory in the country music scene. He went from a high school dropout to an independent artist and is now signed to Warner Music Nashville. In promotion of his major label debut Come Get Your Memory, Matthew discusses how much this project means to him, and how songwriting remains his true passion.

The 25-year-old happens to be a native of Nashville, TN, a "unicorn" as many people call them. "I think it's kinda crazy to realize how many talented people are here. So many people move here to chase those dreams, and I'm just lucky to call it home," says Matthew about being from Music City. He credits his family and the church for giving him the foundation he needed. Matthew's humility comes from the faith he holds dear. "If I just hold my faith strong towards my dreams, God will put me where I'm supposed to be," he shares. He adds, "I was raised in church. I started playing in the youth band. It's kinda been really wild to see how it's all turned into what it is (now)."

His debut EP featured the single that would change his life: "County Line." When asked why that song resonated with so many Matthew responds, " We've all been there. Sometimes you feel like, 'Man mind your business' once you part ways with that person. I solo wrote that song about a real situation I was in." Signed to Holler Boy Records at the time, Matthew released his debut album Born For This in 2022. That project signified how confident he felt about his future in music. Through countless weekends and months of touring, Matthew built a strong fan base to support his endeavors.

Come Get Your Memory was made to showcase his new music as well as to make a statement, and a 25-song tracklist surely does that. "We couldn't pick a favorite. We had 80 songs to choose from in a dropbox. I record and write a lot. It was a hard decision, but we picked our favorite 25," Matthew notes. The young artist saw a clear vision and wasn't going to take the opposition for his ambition. "I'm my own worst critic and biggest hype man. I make music that I would listen to. Some people probably think I'm full of myself, but I jam my own music all the time. I don't think it's weird, but there's always room for improvement as long as you're looking for improvement."

This album also includes an impressive roster of co-writers. Ashley Gorley, Taylor Phillips, HARDY, ERNEST, and many more. "(Phillips) introduced me to so many people and has given me so many opportunities. Taylor actually pitched me a couple songs, and I've always been a critic since I never wanna cut outside songs. I've always been really stubborn about that. They changed my outlook on that," Matthew exclaims. He went on to share, "I had a great opportunity to meet HARDY, me and ERNEST already knew each other. I met Ashley Gorley and Hunter Phelps and I look up to those guys."

One of the most respectable qualities an artist can have is authenticity, and Matthew possesses that in full. When asked where he draws the most inspiration from when it comes to songwriting, it's simple: real life. "I want it to be genuine. I want it to be real. The thing is, some of these situations I haven't experienced. I try to put myself mentally in that space. With songwriting, you have to be so creative and think outside of the box sometimes," he states. "One thing people should always know is that I'm always gonna be myself. I really don't give a shit what anybody says."

The singer has already achieved quite a lot in 2023. He made his Grand Ole Opry debut in March, was a featured performer at Country Radio Seminar, and carried out his 'Love you Again Tour.' On the topic of touring, Matthew hints that he might be adding more dates in the near future. "Our shows are incredible. I put a lot of my time and mind towards how can I make my performances better and more creative. We're getting better and better."
