Chevel Shepherd ‘Everybody’s Got A Story’ Album Review

Chevel Shepherd’s debut album, Everybody’s Got a Story, pays homage to her music inspirations Loretta Lynn, Tanya Tucker, and Gretchen Wilson. The influence these women had on her shine throughout each song as she brings back the old classic country sound but she puts her modern twist on it. The title track of this album is reminiscent of Kacey Musgraves’ modern-but-classic style so it is no surprise that Musgraves was a co-writer on the track. This song tells the story of humans and how we all have issues but those issues define who we are.

The champion of season 15 of The Voice, Shepherd has continued to charm America, taking the time to hone her ability to pick the perfect songs and perfect her delivery which is evident on the tracks throughout the record. “Mama Got the Chair” is an ode to George Strait’s “The Chair” but instead tells the story from the woman’s point of view. This just reiterates her old country influence as she brings back an iconic song and responds to it like she is actually telling the other side of the story.

“Just Like the Circus” is another song that will bring you back to the good ole days with its ultra classic sound and its use of the steel guitar. It is a story about heartbreak and hopelessness and it fits in perfectly with her style.

In an industry that’s constantly changing and modernizing, Shepherd stood firm in her roots with this album and it is the breath of fresh air we all needed.
