Colby Acuff “Once In A Lifetime” Song Review

After the success of his sophomore album If I Were the Devil, Colby Acuff has dropped “Once in a Lifetime,” the first single to be released from his upcoming third album. “Once in a Lifetime” is also his first song being promoted on country radio.

The upbeat song begins with the lyrics, “I woke up with a black eye, mouth tastes like mud / My head’s spinning like a tornado, you can run a car on my blood.” Mentions of country legends Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings throughout the piece are very fitting for the outlaw country music artist, and the dialogue Acuff creates between himself and these artists highlights how much Acuff is influenced by them.

The chorus is a lively countdown to an honest revelation: “I got five too many problems, four different reasons/ I got three dollars left from the folks I played for last night/ I’ve been known for having a little too much fun/ Yeah that’s why I’m a once in a lifetime rambling man.”

Acuff weaves a compelling narrative so that the listener understands that he’s determined to follow in the footsteps of his heroes.

Following the release of “Once in a Lifetime,” Acuff’s third album is set to release in 2022.
