Ernest Discusses Songwriting and His Love For 'Flower Shops'
Ernest has had an incredible 2022 thus far. The singer released his debut album Flower Shops in March with the title track featuring Morgan Wallen performing high on the charts. He also was a part of the writing team behind the No. 1 hit for Kane Brown "One Mississippi." Ernest also got to play in the stadium at Minneapolis with Wallen and Eric Church last month. While performing in New York, The Nash News caught up with the humorous hitmaker to talk about songwriting, new music, and what's next.
The singer-songwriter prides himself on being a writer first and foremost. When asked what it's like to write songs for others, Ernest shared, "If it works, they send a check to your mailbox." He went on to add, "People ask if there's any songs I wish I kept for myself, but no. I'm pretty good at knowing what I want for myself, and knowing when it's right for someone else." His numerous writing credits include "Blessings" by Florida Georgia Line, "Big, Big, Plans" by Chris Lane, and several for Wallen like "Heartless" and "Somebody's Problem."
He also enjoys performing songs he's written for other artists in his shows that people are surprised to learn he wrote. "I've never been like a cover artist; I'm not good at covering other people's songs. Even back in the day when I was playing island beach bars i would play tow hour set of just original songs that nobody ever knew," says Ernest.
Ernest is an artist that believes in making conceptual albums that people want to listen to from top to bottom. "I feel like it might be coming back around where people are consuming albums, artists just gotta make albums. People are listening and singing more every night which is awesome," Ernest exclaims with concentrated intent.
As for the rest of the summer, Ernest said he plans to write more music while playing shows, and he also shared that he may be working on a headlining tour this fall. Whatever comes next from Ernest, fans will surely be ready.
