Ian Munsick 'White Buffalo' Album Review

Ian Munsick remains in a league of his own with his new album, White Buffalo. The sophomore record aims to take Munisck even farther than his boots have already taken him within country music.

The singer is a Wyoming native who attended Belmont University in Nashville, TN. With 18 tracks that all credit Munsick as a co-writer and co-producer, White Buffalo is an ode to his homeland and serves as a raw, untamed depiction of the American West. “All I’ve ever wanted to do as a country music artist is represent the West,” Munsick shared. “The land, people, stories and culture are all what give me endless inspiration to create music. I started writing the songs for White Buffalo three years ago. I’d never been so eager to write, and a big factor in that excitement was the way you all responded to my last album, Coyote Cry," shares Munsick in a press release.

The album begins with, "From The Horse's Mouth." The lyrics stand out as it is a list of simple pleasures Munsick appreciates most. "I drink my water from the stream comin' down the hill / My wine right off the vine and moonshine from the still / Have to see it to believe it 'cause there's bullshit all around / And the truth only comes from the horse's mouth." "Field Of Dreams" offers a nostalgic look at Munsick's growing up. The tune features the great Vince Gill, who adds his vocals to an already prophetic track.

"Barn Burner" is sure to be one of the more attention-grabbing entries of the record. Munsick had once said that he realized country music had a lot of female revenge songs. He wanted to create a song for all of the men who have been wronged by a woman they loved. "She broke my heart then her barn burned down / Like one thing led to the other / Somebody let all her horses out / And then lit it up like a mother."

"Little Man" is no doubt inspired by Munsick's son. The beautiful ode is from a father talking to his son about all he knows. Munsick sings about appreciating the time he has to watch the boy grow. "I'll soak it in while I can / You got a way of making big world worries / Seem so little, man."

This is an album steeped in the rich and vast picture of simple, country life where the open breeze can let any cowboy take flight. This album also embraces the history of the Wild West, which brings the Native American influence. The final song on the record is "Indian Paintbrush," which captures the essence of the project. Munsick shows love for the ones who made the West what it was and paints a picture of the scenic beauty.
