'Introducing Lauren Watkins' EP Review

Rising star, Lauren Watkins, just released her seven-song EP titled, Introducing: Lauren Watkins. This Nashville native lives and breathes authentic country music and her debut collection is proof of that.

The EP starts with “Sleeping In My Makeup." This comedically true song tells the story of the aftermath of a night out on the town. The upbeat sound and perfectly put lyrics make this song incredible. “There’s tequila on my breath / And a pounding in my head / I’m a dive bar shit show downward spiral lately / And I’m even more a mess when I wake up / He’s sleeping in her bed / and I’m sleeping in my makeup.”

“Camel Blues” follows with its gentle guitar and soft vocals. This ode to the cigarette brand is truly a love song to a substance that acts as a crutch. With a full heart, Watkins sings, “Whoever made them must’ve named them / For the shit they get me through.” To follow this ballad, Watkins proudly sings the track “Anybody But You." This storytelling song discusses all of the ways to try to fall out of love with someone. Watkins’ raspy, true grit voice makes this creative song light and fun.

"Grain Of Salt" country rock song is full of spirit. Watkins’ country twang makes this song so authentic and enjoyable. What follows is “Shirley Temple:" a gentle slow song that shows off Watkins’ beautiful vocal range. “She’s grenadine / She’s everything I’ll never be / Not even

a little / Shirley Temple sweet and simple.”

“Ole Miss” is another detailed tune with themes of nostalgia and missing someone. Watkins sings about the past and missing someone you used to love. This song dwells on young love, which makes it relatable to anyone who listens. With that, we hear “Dark Places." The blend of an acoustic and electric guitar makes it feel truly country. Watkins’ lyricism and wide vocal range are proof of her immense talent and craft for country music.
