Jessie James Decker “Should Have Known Better” Song Review
Jessie James Decker is a jack of all trades. She is the owner of the clothing brand Kittenish, a lifestyle guru, a New York Times bestselling author, a mom to three kids, and a country music singer. Her most recent song, and first single of 2021, “Should Have Known Better” is an unchained anthem meant to empower those who listen.
On social media Decker told fans, “I’ve had my heart broken before and I know you have too, we all have at some point in our lives whether it’s from a relationship ending or people trying to tear you down! This song is all about not letting that pain break you and coming out of it on the other side strong and confident!”
It begins with the forceful pounds of drum beats. Decker’s voice makes an entrance alongside a guitar playing low notes that help elevate her voice. In the first verse Decker says, “You get what you give and you reap what you sow / Where you left your dirt, boy, a flower has grown / Don’t know what you’ve got, til it’s out of your reach / So I’ve been loving myself like you never loved me.” Right from the start, Decker is claiming her happiness back with a sense of urgency.
The lyrics are commanding and Decker sings the words with assertiveness; she feels what she sings. “Should Have Known Better” was penned by Madi Yanofsky as well as the prolific songwriting team made up of Benjamin Alexander Kohn, Tom Barnes, and Pete Kelleher. The trio are known for their hits with Lewis Capaldi, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Dua Lipa.
What makes it so exciting to listen to is the attitude in Decker’s voice. She is leaving behind the things from the past that have hurt her. The yells of “Hallelujah” in every chorus and the repeating words of “Should have known better than to break my heart” throughout the track only heighten the relieving emotions she’s expressing. The song’s positive aura, which glimmers with pop-infused country excellence, is compelling; Decker knows how to convey those feelings effortlessly.
