Little Big Town Discusses Making 'Mr. Sun' and Touring with the Eagles
Dynamic country quartet Little Big Town headlined Country Jam USA on Friday, July 22nd. Before their stunning performance, The Nash News caught up with the group backstage to talk about their recently revealed brand new album.
The four members of Little Big Town are normally tied to the hip. COVID was the first time in their 20 years that the band had to be separated as. What ended up becoming of that time spent away is Mr. Sun: the band's 10th studio LP. "We were a part for five or six months which is very very strange, I mean Jimi was stuck with me, but it was weird not seeing them and our children not being together," Karen Fairchild, the leading lady of the group shared. "We started writing, some Zoom writing, but we kept accumulating songs that we we're loving."
According to the band, the project came together naturally with tracks they felt tied to. "It's a fun record. It holds hands really nicely with Nightfall," Fairchild added, referencing their 2020 release.
The day we chatted to the band was also the release day for their track, "Rich Man," which was written solely by member Jimi Westbrook. "That's kind of an interesting story because I started writing that song about 10 years ago. I wrote the majority of it and then there was part of it that I just couldn't settle on," he told The Nash News. "A year, year and a half ago, I finally got the final touch on it. It kind of just made its way onto this record."
While listening to "Rich Man" it makes sense as to why it took so long to finish. "Rich Man" feels like a "life" song: a track you need to write after living a decent amount. The wise nature emulates with lines like, "I keep my head up high, feet on the ground / Love the ones I'm living 'round / Life is just that simple to me / Yeah, I'm a rich man."
Little Big Town also recently completed their 'Bandwagon Tour' with Miranda Lambert a run of shows in the UK with the infamous band the Eagles. They played in massive venues like Liverpool Anfield Stadium and BST Hyde Park. When speaking about what they learned from touring with such a legendary band they answer, "Longevity for sure," while Kimberly Schlapman adds, "And their harmonies are still perfection."
