On Friday, March 24th, Luke Combs released his fifth studio album, Gettin’ Old. Combs is known for consistent greatness, but his latest album takes this to the extreme. Combs is a staple in the country music community and any new project of his comes with anticipation.
Gettin’ Old is an astonishing achievement in songwriting. Every track brings a unique story, each as impactful as the last. Combs preceded his latest album with three singles; “Joe," “Love You Anyway," and title track, “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old.” The first new tune heard on the album is “Hannah Ford Road.” In this fast paced country anthem, Combs reminisces on simpler times, all connected by Hannah Ford Road. Combs proclaims, “We were growin’ down Hannah Ford Road / It always took us where we wanted to go / We couldn’t wait any longer / And the feelin’ couldn’t get any stronger." Right from the jump, Combs prepares listeners for a wild ride.
One of the most impressive entries on the project, coming fourth in the track list is “You Found Yours.” It's a beautiful story told through a single piece of wisdom. Combs details the moments in which one knows they have found love. Not only does Combs bring the vocal heat fans have come to expect, but also a vulnerable, clever writing style that touches the heart. Perfect songwriting in combination with a uniquely satisfying melody come together to form an instant classic. Combs sings, “Edge of 17, worked all summer long / Washing cars and pulling weeds from the neighbors lawn / Well it wasn't no king ranch, but it was paid for / When you find that kind of freedom buddy you found yours.”

Combs continues in his pattern of excellence with “See Me Now.” In this heart wrenching song, Combs depicts the relatable feeling of missing a lost loved one, and wishing they could see who you have become. It is clear that the country superstar’s ability to invoke emotion and tell a meaningful story is unmatched. Combs exclaims, “I could tell you all about this life that I've been livin' / I bet you’d be the proudest guy in town / If I could see you / See me now.” Staying true to his style, the fan favorite uses his raspy, booming voice to add depth to an incredibly sensitive piece.
Gettin’ Old wraps up with a slower song, titled, “The Part.” “The Part” is a vulnerable admission of the struggles of the road. Combs sings about all of the joys of his career, but also the things no one warned him about; he sings, “Do some shots in a smokey bar / And everybody knows your name / Till they changing out the marquee sign / Then that darkness comes to find you."
Combs ends this album exactly as it begins, with honesty. His latest addition to his growing discography is an honest and vulnerable peek into the life of the artist. Every track is uniquely personal, giving the LP an intensely personal feel, while still maintaining the standard of greatness that Combs continues to uphold. It is clear that the once overnight sensation is growing up, but his music will never get old.
