Madelyn Rose Talks Debut EP 'teenage heartache' and Being 16
Taylor Swift and LeAnn Rimes made names for themselves as teenagers. The need for young, female artists in country music has always been important to the genre. Madelyn Rose certainly has what it takes to connect to young and female country fans. Rose just released her debut EP teenage heartache on Friday, July 28th. Tackling love, heartbreak, and finding oneself, the singer treats these songs as a journal. Rose discussed the project and her journey so far, as well as what she hopes people can take away from her music.
Rose's story began in her bedroom in New York: the place where she learned to write songs and eventually produce on her own. "It started when I was 3 or 4 years old when I got a keyboard from a garage sale. I got started with some lessons and it was just a fun hobby. Along the way I got really invested in country music, "shares Rose. She started letting her creativity shine when experimenting with writing and mixing songs. Rose discovered that she could tell her own stories just like the artists she loves listening to. She cites Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson as musical inspirations.
When it comes to the sound of her music, Rose doesn't intend to shy too far away from the country genre. "I like to keep it country and if I lean away from that then it would feel more like rock. I'm not a huge pop fan. I love the twang that comes with country music," Rose says. She went on to say that her songs "Sober" and "Missing Me Now" were meant to sound like "Kelly Clarkson meets country." She is drawn to tunes that carry strong vocals that captivate listeners.
teenage heartache captures a moment in time. "I've been through a couple breakups, so I know what going through all these different emotions feels like," the young singer admits. Her intuitive writing will continue to be one of her biggest assets. Already, she has the ability to summarize her own feelings into a well-thought-out track. The singer traveled back and forth to Nashville over the last year to write and record the project. "Being in the studio and having my producers, and my parents, and all these people listening to my feelings about guys, it did get emotional. You're re-living everything to put into the recording," she notes.
When it came to naming her debut record, Rose shared how she had to listen to her own voice. "My label suggested calling it 'Madelyn Rose,' or 'Vol. 1,' and I just felt like those were taking the easy way out. The vibe is very 'American Heartbreak' or 'Teenage Heartbreak,' but those names have been taken," Rose explains. "I came up with heartache instead of heartbreak, and I have something a lot of these other artists don't have: I'm a teenager. So teenage heartache was what I decided." Just like the titling of the EP, Rose will come into her own in her unique way. She carries the promise of being a voice for her peers, and this is only the beginning of Rose.
