Megan Moroney 'Lucky' Album Review
Megan Moroney had a breakout year in 2022 and now looks to cement her place with the release of her debut album Lucky. Possessing vulnerability, charm, and boundless talent, the proud Georgia native will continue to take Nashville by storm.
During her freshman year at the University of Georgia, an opportunity to open for Chase Rice at the iconic Georgia Theatre prompted Moroney to write her first original song. Since then, she has enjoyed being able to tell stories that can relate to listeners everywhere. Moroney released her debut EP Pistol Made Of Roses in June of 2022. Songs like "Hair Salon" and "Fix You Too" set her apart from her peers. Then a few months later in September, "Tennessee Orange" was released. The song took the singer to new heights, even performing on ESPN's College Game Day. Moroney went on to win a 2023 CMT Music Award and is nominated for New Female Artist of the Year at the 2023 ACM Awards.
Moroney had previously released "I'm Not Pretty," "Girl In The Mirror," and the title track from Lucky. "I'm Not Pretty" is a humorous take on what happens when an ex's new girlfriend remains jealous. Moroney's relatable lyrics truly shine on this track as well as "Girl In The Mirror." That song is as raw and real as it gets when realizing one's self-worth has been depleted. These tracks generated attention around the project, and rightfully so.
There are plenty of anthems for broken hearts to run to on this record. "Kansas Anymore" tells the story of a relationship that is not the same as it was. "Kansas was you and me / Damn we were happy / But somewhere we took a wrong right turn / Got lost so far from where we were." Playing off the phrase "we're not in Kansas anymore" was a smart writing decision. "Mustang Or Me" is another tear-jerker. Moroney begs the question, "Who's gonna break down first / This Mustang or me?" She has a way of finding just the right words to convey deep emotions often felt by girls her age.
"Traitor Joe" is one of the more spirited tracks that helps to pick up the tempo of the record. Here, Moroney is singing to a guy that the woman he is with isn't who he thinks she is. "Boy you gotta know / She's a player (player) / Wolf in sheep's clothes / All I'm saying (saying) is you should let her go / She's a traitor (traitor) Joe." Moroney is just proving she's got her eye on anyone who is playing games.
The album concludes with "Sad Song For Sad People," but there is more than meets the eye in this one. It isn't a heartbreak ballad, but a song with a message of hope. She ends the chorus with, "I write sad songs for sad people / But I wrote this love song for you." Lucky takes listeners on a journey through varying degrees of young love. Moroney, along with her crew of fans, is simply trying to figure it all out.
