Miranda Lambert, Jack Ingram & Jon Randall ‘The Marfa Tapes’ Review

Miranda Lambert’s newest collaborative album The Marfa Tapes, written and performed with Jack Ingram and Jon Randall was just released and is available everywhere you buy or stream music now (May 7th)

This album is country music in its most pure and raw form. Recorded on one microphone, a few acoustic guitars, and outside under the open sky, this album feels like a night around the campfire. Each song was recorded in one take, you can hear the wind blowing against the microphone, the planes flying overhead, the artist’s laughter when they make a mistake, and joking with one another after each song.

Now we all know the multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning, singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert. Her album collaborators include Jack Ingram and Jon Randall. Ingram is best known for his country chart-topping song “Wherever You Are”, and has previously written with Lambert on several of her other songs. Randall is a Grammy award-winning songwriter, he’s written for Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney, and Reba McEntire just to name a few. These three songwriters have worked together before, they often take writer’s trips to Marfa, Texas, hence the album title. Marfa is a small town, home to minimalist art installations, the Prada Marfa storefront, and the Marfa Lights Festival.

While the whole album is acoustic the tone of each of the songs is so different from the one before. From the fun drinking song the three wrote a few years ago, “Tequila Does”, to “Tin Man” a heartbreaking solo song where Lambert tells the Wizard of Oz character that his life is easier without a heart, to the gritty country jam “Gereldean”, The Marfa Tapes has something that will make anyone’s toe tap along. Give this new collaborative album a listen, you will feel like you are right there singing along with Lambert and her co-writers.
