Nate Smith: Self-Titled Debut Album Review

Nate Smith released his debut LP on April 28th, 2023. This self-titled album comes with

much anticipation as Smith has already accumulated quite a large following. Alongside the

self-titled album is a deluxe version, released on the same day, with six additional tracks. Many may know Smith from his current country radio smash, “Whiskey on You” which has accumulated over 280 million streams, and dominated country radio, sitting at number one for multiple weeks.

Smith starts the self-titled album off strong with “If I Could Stop Loving You,” a heartfelt cry from a place of love and frustration. When listening to this track, listeners can feel the pain coming from the California native’s voice. His tone is both sensitive and provokes emotion, but also booming and raw, making for a unique combination that works. Smith proclaims, “If I could stop loving you, loving you / Believe me, baby, I'm trying to, trying to / I know that I can be over you, over you / If I could just stop loving you loving you.” Smith opens the album with a vulnerable look at what it really feels like to be heartbroken and pleading for relief.

The singer takes the vibes into his own hands, immediately showing his other side - fast, fun, instant party classics. “Alright, Alright, Alright” is sure to get the audience dancing and put a smile on their faces. Smith sings about a great night and how everything will be ‘alright, alright, alright.’ Smith’s ability to break the hearts of listeners with open, honest lyrics, combined with his ability to make them raise their drinks in the air and dance is what makes this self-titled collection so special.

Smith shows off his vocal talent in “I Don’t Wanna Go To Heaven.” The juxtaposition of a soft, sweet love song, and his raspy, raw, country voice only deepen the impact of the song. “I Don’t Wanna Go To Heaven” is beautifully written and performed, and tells the story of a love so strong that Smith doesn't want to go anywhere, even heaven; He cries, “I don’t wanna go to Heaven / When Heaven’s right here lying next to me / I count every kiss and every blessing, it’s the only proof I’ll ever need / I don’t wanna go to Heaven / When Heaven’s right here next to me.” This sequence shows both incredible vocal talent, and undeniable writing ability.

Smith is growing in popularity at an alarming rate, and he deserves every bit of it. His

unique voice and perspective make every one of these tracks an absolute joy to listen to. It is

even more impressive considering this is his first-ever album. The popularity Nate Smith has

gained is all well-earned, and this album is sure to send him into the stratosphere.
