Old Dominion is not new to country music. Since forming in 2007, the band has released hit after hit on the country scene. Their newest single, “I Should Have Married You” is not only bound to be a hit, but it’s the perfect upbeat, beachy song for the summertime.
The intro to the song sets the tone for the whole track. An upbeat rhythm with the drums, shaker, and tambourine is a light way to welcome the listeners in. The harmonic instruments start with the vocal line, making it more important. This tune repeats the chorus quite a few times but never feels repetitive. The second to last chorus has a fuller sound and it feels almost like a bridge. It creates this rush of energy through the song that leads perfectly into the emptier repeat.
The vocals on this track are just as important to the vibe of the song. Though the vocalist has a deeper timbre, the tune never feels weighed down. The background vocals are minimal, but create cool moments of accent, bringing the listener's attention back to the song. They also help to highlight the lyrics by underlining the words. Lyrics like, “If I hadn’t been so young and stupid / Yeah, I let somebody beat me to it / Don’t know whatcha got till you lose it / Guess I blew it / I should’ve married you” is just one example of the great storytelling in Old Dominion’s newest single.
