Parker McCollum Discusses New Album 'Never Enough'

Parker McCollum is set to release his sophomore album Never Enough on May 12th. The singer-songwriter has had a lot to be grateful for since his debut record Goldchain Cowboy arrived in 2021. Winning New Male Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, three number-one songs, and successful tours have positioned him as a fan favorite in today's country music landscape. He sat down with The Nash News to discuss the past few years and his new album.

The singer is a proud Texan and a student of country music. "In my opinion, the greatest artists in country music of all time are from Texas," says McCollum. He loved music growing up but never seriously thought about pursuing it until high school. He was around 15 or 16 years old when he began practicing his guitar and trying to write songs. "Even when I started performing dinky shows here and there, I didn't really like it that much. I really just liked playing guitar in my room with my friends," he explains. While he has developed a greater love for performing, in many ways McCollum is still the same guy he was back then.

When asked how his musical journey has evolved over the years, Mccollum replies, "I don't think it's evolved too much, whether that's a good thing or a bad thing I don't know. My songwriting process hasn't changed at all. I still sit around my bus or my house trying to write sad country love songs about everything going terribly wrong." He adds, "In recent years I've tried to write some more up-tempo entertaining songs strictly for myself. On stage, I got bored only singing sad, slow songs."

McCollum describes the past few years as being "extremely exhausted in the best way possible. Blessed comes to mind anytime I think about it." For a guy from Conroe, TX, this is better than he admits he could've dreamed of. "I've kind of learned the hard way to stop and enjoy where you are. I used to be so focused on making it and hustling and being the hardest working, and I still am that way just with a little better perspective," shares McCollum. That is where he found inspiration for the album title Never Enough.

Choosing songs for this album proved to be as straightforward as the singer himself. "I wrote 14 songs, put 14 songs on the record, and one I didn't write. Which I didn't do on my last record, I didn't have any outside cuts," says McCollum. He notes that he wanted to have at least one song with an outside perspective. "Handle On You" was also an easy choice for the lead single. He shared that the label loved it and he also knew instantly it would be the first song people got to hear.

McCollum described Never Enough as being similar to his previous material, but maybe being a little more mature. There are still the country themes about love and heartbreak, but he does share how his life has changed and what he's learned along the way. "There are a couple songs on there that I think people will kinda turn their head at a little bit. I just try to. be genuine and authentic in my approach," he notes. The singer has a high standard for his work, and fans can see the passion and work he puts forth. This new album is surely going to keep those standards high for the time to come.
