Songs I Grew Up On with Frank Ray

Frank Ray sat down for our Songs I Grew Up On series at a perfect time. His new EP Getcha Some arrived on Friday, August 12th. The singer achieved wide success with his single "Country'd Look Good On You." He has been able to combine country and pop into a seamless sound that suits his style. With so many musical influences, his five choices might surprise you.

1. "Alibis" by Tracy Lawrence

Ray chose this song because, "Tracy Lawrence was one of my biggest influences." This song in itself set the bar for how Ray wanted to approach his writing."It's a heart-wrenching story where I was just like 'what in the world,'" said Ray. The message of owning when you have a made a mistake is something so many can relate to.

2. "Running Out Of Reasons To Run" by Rick Trevino

A fan of red dirt country, the Texas native found the style of music he wanted to pursue thanks to this song. Ray also appreciated how the Hispanic singer showed representation, and how Ray hopes to do that as well. "We just did a school supply run in New Mexico and we donated some school supplies to this middle school. I put on an acoustic performance and I was telling these kids 'if you work hard and set your mind to your dreams, you can achieve it."

3. "My Maria" by Brooks & Dunn

"If you're not jamming to this playlist by now, you're dead inside," Ray said playfully. When it came to this song Ray explained, "I remembered driving to school with my mom and trying to emulate what they were able to do on the radio." The duo became a vocal influence for Ray.

4. "Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)" by Travis Tritt

The revenge song impacted the way Ray wanted to go about his story-telling. "We've all been there at point in time, and no one says it better than Travis Tritt." After listening to its lyrics, Ray was on to something.

5. "Cowboy Take Me Away" by The Chicks

"They left such a huge mark in country music. Some of the best harmonies, some of the best song writing," exclaimed Ray. He loved the way the song gave the feeling of, "being swept off your feet."
