The Biggest Revelations From Kelsea Ballerini on the Call Her Daddy Podcast
Kelsea Ballerini is fresh off of releasing her EP, Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, which let fans in on what happened during her marriage to Morgan Evans. The songstress filed for divorce from Evans in August of last year after 4 1/2 years of marriage. While initially, both parties stayed quiet about the ending of their relationship, Evans went on to release the very personal song "Over For You." Now that Ballerini has released her own truth through song, she appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast to discuss what really happened. Here are the biggest revelations from the interview.
How They Met
At the beginning of their relationship, Ballerini found comfort in Evans as her life was changing drastically. They met in the spring of 2016 while the two were hosting an award show. "I was on my third single, and I just felt like the world was opening up to me. I believed in everything. I was so starry-eyed to my life and I met this person who is so charming and sweet, and it aligned with this goodness that was happening in my world," shared Ballerini. The "HEARTFIRST" singer was also drawn to how close Evans was to his family citing that her family was "broke," due to her own parent's divorce. In Evans' family, she saw unity.
"He loved me more at 23. I love me more at 29."
Evans and Ballerini ended up getting engaged after just 9 months of dating. Ballerini admits that if family and friends had doubts about how fast their relationship had progressed, she tried to block it out. She said she swore she would never get married as, "it just wasn't my thing." Ballerini also talked about how much of a people pleaser she was, and just wanted Evans to be happy. She shared a moment that happened between her friend Megan and Evans she thinks about now. "The first time she met him she pulled him aside and she said 'You have a lot more to gain from this than she does.'"
There Were Years of Separations and Therapy
Ballerini opened up about the lack of time the couple was able to spend together due to their busy careers. She felt a lack of effort from Evans and began to feel resentful that she was putting more into seeing each other than he was. "I would book and send him the flights," she shared. While noting how disconnected they were at times, Ballerini opened up about the times she slept on the couch. "I slept on the couch the night before the CMAs in 2019. I remember being in rehearsal and texting him 'See you on the carpet.'"
Differences In Starting A Family
Ballerini shared that at the beginning of their relationship, she did have a desire for starting a family with Evans. As time went on, she realized she wasn't ready to have kids. "That's a fundamental difference. That was something we had talked about early on and that was something I was hanging on," said Ballerini. She also went to see a doctor about freezing her eggs and didn't share that with Evans, leading to a difficult conversation about their differences.
She Learned The Power of Female Friendship
While feeling lonely during her relationship with Evans, Ballerini learned to lean on the support of her friends. "I'm an only child and I always wanted sisters so badly. That is such a gift that came out of it. I have such a great group of girlfriends that have shown up when it wasn't convenient. She even shared that one time while performing in LA she sent Evans a flight she had booked for him because she needed him there. When he didn't come, a friend of hers remembered how hard that was for Ballerini. Last fall, that same friend flew to Ballerini's show in LA to signify that she would be there for Ballerini as Evans wasn't. Ballerini got emotional during the telling of that story.
Everything Changed Once Evans Released "Over For You"
She brought up wanting a divorce after coming to terms with their differences in how they wanted to live their lives. "I respect you, and I respect me, and because of that, I can't be in this marriage." She went on to say, "It was beautiful. We cried, we hugged, and then it changed. When Evans alluded to feeling blindsided in "Over For You," Ballerini was "livid." "If he truly was blindsided, where was he? I think that's the point," explained Ballerini. Ballerini shared that she never felt like Evans was an opportunist in the relationship, but has a different view of his intentions now. "I feel if I'm being honest, it was really opportunistic for him to put that (song) out there when he did when we were still going through the legalities of getting divorced," shared the singer.
