The Highwomen “Highway Unicorn (Road To Love)” Song Review
The all-female supergroup The Highwomen, composed of singer-songwriters Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, and Amanda Shires, put their signature spin on Lady Gaga’s “Highway Unicorn (Road To Love)” in celebration of the megastar’s tenth anniversary edition of Born This Way, out now. West Coast jazz and southern soul songstress Madeline Edwards joined The Highwomen for this performance, as did up-and-coming Nashville country artist Brittney Spencer.
“Highway Unicorn (Road To Love)” originates as high-energy, with layered pop stylistics and electronic dance makings that form an immensely dense body of work suited for a night out on the town. However, The Highwomen’s take on the song, with the enlisted help of Edwards and Spencer, walked in another direction. The song’s radiating elements morph into a twangy, western-feel, amped with old-timey guitar sounds that simply embark on the journey to love – except this time, through the Wild Wild West.
The Highwomen released their debut album, The Highwomen, back in 2019. The collection scored many nominations, including the Grammy Award for Best Country Song, with “Crowded Table” taking home the cake. Newcomers Brittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards are climbing up the ladder in their own careers.
Born This Way originally dropped in 2011. Its re-release has sold over one million copies during its first week globally, and hosts a few cover songs reworked by artists in the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies. Other covers on the album include Big Freedia’s “Judas,” country-pop songwriter Orville Peck’s “Born This Way (The Country Road Version),” Kylie Minogue’s “Marry The Night,” Years & Years’ “The Edge of Glory,” and Ben Platt’s “You and I.”
Born This Way The Tenth Anniversary is out now via Interscope Records.
